Frequently asked questions

No one is more surprised than I am that my contact page needs an FAQ.

How can I become a graphic designer / web designer / learn web development?
This kind of question is nearly impossible to answer over email. The best short answer I can give you is: study some of the many books devoted to these subjects, work hard, and see if there’s any pertinent adult education classes offered your area.
Should I apply to art school / design school / an MFA program / RISD in particular?
If I don’t know you, I really can’t give you that kind of life advice. If you have a specific question about something, I can try to help, but keep in mind that most schools are more than happy to put you in touch with a current student in the program you’re considering as part of the application process.
But will you review my portfolio site and let me know if I’m good enough to get in to RISD / other graphic design program?
Unfortunately, this is not something I feel comfortable doing — even if I had the time to do it, which I sadly don’t.
I’m doing a project / report / thesis on graphic design satire and found your site. Can you help me?
Certainly, but it’s difficult to respond to a vague request for “help.” Please check out the stuff on my thesis site, and then if you want to ask me a specific question about my research or methodology I’ll try to help you out.
I’m a former student of yours and I have a follow-up question / I’m coming back to coding after a while / etc.
Please don’t hesitate to ask questions about stuff we did in class, even if the course is long over.
I’m a Smithie and I found you via the alumnae database. I’m thinking about a career in graphic design, etc. Could I ask you about that?
Sure, of course. That’s part of the reason why I’m in the database. Send on your specific questions and I’ll try to help.
